Why You Should Brace Your N70 Hilux Power Steering Rack

Why You Should Brace Your N70 Hilux Power Steering Rack

The N70 Hilux's power steering rack is mounted to a fairly light factory crossmember — fine in stock form, but a known weak point once you start running bigger tyres, aggressive geometry (extended travel, lifted, or larger diameter tyres with more leverage on the tie rods), or regular off-road use.

What actually flexes

The steering rack itself is bolted to a crossmember that also carries the front sway bar and part of the engine/subframe load path. Under hard steering input — corrugations, rock crawling, hitting a pothole with load on the wheel — that crossmember can flex slightly. Repeated flex works the mounting points and, over time, can lead to play in the rack, uneven tie rod wear, or in worse cases cracked mounts.

Advantages of bracing it

  • Reduced rack flex — ties the two rack mounting points together as one rigid unit instead of relying on the crossmember alone.
  • More consistent steering feel — less deflection under load means steering input translates more directly, especially noticeable at speed on rough roads or during hard cornering.
  • Reduced wear on tie rod ends and rack bushings — less flex means less abnormal loading on these wear items over time.
  • Cheap insurance against a costly failure — a cracked or failed rack mount is an expensive and inconvenient repair; the brace is a small upfront cost by comparison.
  • Bolt-on install — no welding required, reuses the factory mounting points, so it's a straightforward afternoon job.

Who should fit one

Worth fitting if you're running larger tyres, doing regular corrugations or rock work, or you've already noticed any play or clunking around the steering rack area. Even on a fairly standard daily driver it's cheap, easy insurance.
